The University of North Georgia men’s basketball team earned its fourth win in a row with a 91-84 win over Peach Belt opponent Augusta, on Jan. 13, behind a 24-point performance by senior Shaquan Cantrell.
The win did not come without a fight as frustration began to rise in Nighthawks coaches and players toward the conclusion of the tight game. North Georgia remained calm however, which helped secure an important conference victory.
“I think we stayed calm.” Senior Shaquan Cantrell said, “Basketball is a game of runs and we held it together and kept fighting.”
The fight and determination of the Nighthawks was evident as UNG held the Jaguars to one of three shooting in the final two minutes of the game to extend the team’s winning streak to five games.
The team’s last loss came on December 30 to UNC Pembroke by a score of 74-80, and the Nighthawks have used that defeat to help fuel their recent winning ways.
“We felt like we allowed Pembroke to be the aggressor.” Head coach Chris Faulkner said, “We made it a point to our guys that we’re not going to allow the other team to dictate how the game is going to be played.”
