UNG Gainesville's Martha T. Nesbitt Academic Building and Hugh Mills Physical Education Center have been closed until further notice.
Martha T. Nesbitt Academic Building and Hugh Mills Physical Education Center, two buildings on the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus, were closed and evacuated today, around 3:30 P.M. due to a reported gas leak. Students reportedly started smelling the leak around 3:15.
Mary Johnson, a UNG sophomore, asked about the leak in the UNG Gainesville GroupMe chat at 3:23 P.M. asking the question, “Am I delusional or do I smell gas in the Strickland parking lot [?]”
Zach Liss, a UNG freshman, confirmed Johnson’s suspicions saying, “Ur not delusional, I smelled it too [.]”
A UNG Alert was sent around 3:40 P.M. alerting students of the leak and the cancellation/suspension of classes until further notice.
Campus safety and Gainesville fire department have declined to comment at this time.
UPDATE: 4:16 P.M. UNG Campus Safety has confirmed that the gas leak is under control. Students and faculty are clear to reenter both buildings.
