Hundreds of families filled Gainesville’s downtown square Friday evening for the city’s annual Trick or Treat on the Square, an event that has become highly anticipated in Hall County.
From 3 pm to 6 pm, children of all ages walked through the square collecting candy from local businesses and community booths. Restaurants had their buildings decorated with spiderwebs, pumpkins and flashing lights as people eating outside watched the excitement of the evening.
The Gainesville Police Department closed off roads, allowing families to walk around freely. The Gainesville Fire Department was also in attendance, as young children were able to get in the fire trucks and take pictures.
From ghosts and monsters to superheroes and princesses, there was a wide variety of costumes. It wasn’t just kids getting into the Halloween spirit; parents were very creative with what they were wearing.
Pat Gosselin, a Gainesville local, was surprised by how popular this event was. “This was my first time going. I can’t believe how great these costumes are and how busy today ended up being,” said Gosselin.
A stage was set up in the middle of the square, where contestants in different costumes would compete for prizes. Amid all the candy and joy, Halloween turned out to be a success in Gainesville.
“Some kids don’t live in neighborhoods where there is a lot of trick-or-treating. This event gives them the ability to experience a fun Halloween.” – Donnie Ambrose, Gainesville local
As the night wound down, children checked their candy bags and left with big smiles. Trick or Treat on the Square once again proves the good things that can happen when a community comes together.
