You’re telling me they’re taxing washing machines?

UNG told students that when they returned from spring break, every dorm on campus was going to have new washers and dryers. Along with that, students now have to pay $1.75 per wash and then another $1.75 per dry.

The only way students can pay for their laundry to be done is on the Speed Queen app using their Campus Cash. Funds can be added additionally through the Campus Cash Portal. 

Students in the UNG community on YikYak were talking about the laundry updates.

YikYak user “Greycatlady,” said, “I just washed my sweater in the sink at Lewis because I can’t afford laundry here.”

Another anonymous post was a screenshot of an email Residence Life sent to students about their laundry, with the caption, “BOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” and under that were comments saying “Now all of campus is going to smell like homeless people,” and how people are going to “start overloading the machines to do less cycles and break them.”

Another anonymous post said “BRO HOW DO I DO THE LAUNDRY I DONT GET IT AAAAA. It says that I dont have any campus cash but I KNOW that’s not true.”

Jessie Baer, a sophomore education major, says “It just seems like a lot even after everything that students have to pay already. It’s cheap, but that can add up by the end of the semester. I do like how we can use Campus Cash to pay because I hardly use my Campus Cash anyways.”

An email from UNG Auxillary Services in response to Vanguard’s questions says, “In the past laundry services were provided in-house. Our repair technician retired; and furthermore, we had a significant number of machines in need of service that we could not financially keep up with a phased approach of repairing/replacing them. In 2023 Auxiliary Services had a bid posted for a provider to provide laundry services.  From the bid, we are now working with a provider that is providing a higher quality machine with guarantees associated with less downtime and machine replacement.”
