In honor of Hispanic Heritage month this October, the University of North Georgia will be hosting an art exhibition open to all students titled “Roots.” This display of student art in the Library and Technology Center on UNG’s Dahlonega campus will be open for free to the public from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19.
The exhibition is sponsored by Multicultural Student Affairs and organized by UNG’s Department of Visual Arts. Students taking ART 3570 (Mexican and Latino Art) will be curating this exhibition under the leadership of Art Professor Ana Pozzi Harris.
Senior Graphic Design and English major, Zalissa Lomax, who is involved in the curation of the exhibition, says, “The class is spending the semester learning about how to curate an art exhibition while simultaneously learning skills in promoting and advertising.”
Senior Art Education major who is also enrolled in ART 3570, Estephanie Perez, says, “To me roots means where you come from. It’s like the foundation of what makes you, you. At least for me, it involves where I come from, where my parents come from, the religion we come from.” Not only will Perez be helping curate the exhibition, but also plans on submitting her own art piece to be judged and displayed in the art show.
Six of the student participants will be presented with awards determined by a judge outside of the UNG Arts Department, along with a $50 cash prize. The awards will be presented at a reception on Oct. 8 from 4-6 p.m in the Library and Technology Center at UNG’s Dahlonega campus.
