The University of North Georgia’s Pre-Vet Club is preparing to accept donations for its annual Blanket Drive, a fundraiser aimed at supporting the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia in caring for the many animals that come through its doors daily.
HSNEGA has provided a wishlist of needed items to assist in caring for rescued animals and support their caregivers. Donations in all forms —whether pet supplies, cleaning products or gift cards — will be accepted, helping to meet a range of needs.
For the animals, the shelter is seeking soft bedding materials like towels and fleece throws, which offer warmth and comfort. A variety of pet foods—both dog and cat, and in different brands and sizes—are also needed, along with essential items like collars, slow-feeder dog bowls, KONG toys and an assortment of treats for both cats and dogs. Additionally, donations of scratching pads and other enrichment items such as cat toys are welcomed to support the animals’ mental well-being while they await adoption.
The caregivers at HSNEGA also require specific supplies to maintain a clean and safe environment. Items like disposable shoe covers, bleach, glass cleaner, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer and paper towels are all vital in keeping the facility sanitary and ensuring the health of both the animals and the staff.
For those unable to donate physical items, gift cards to major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Costco, Sam’s Club, PetSmart or local grocery and office supply stores are appreciated. These allow the shelter to purchase exactly what is needed at any given time, providing flexibility and immediate support.
“It warms my heart that we are able to pull together and create a wonderful fundraiser for the local animal shelter. We may not be able to afford top-of-the-line items, but we are changing many animals’ lives one blanket, treat or toy at a time” – Madison Almond, Pre-Vet Club member
While the Pre-Vet Club is finalizing details for the start of the fundraiser, no official date has been confirmed yet. The club plans to promote the event with campus flyers. The goal is to make it easy and convenient for people to contribute, whether they are dropping off items or purchasing gift cards.
Once the Blanket Drive begins, donations can be dropped off Tuesday through Saturday during the Adoption Center’s open hours 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Donation bins will be placed in high-traffic areas around campus including the Science, Engineering and Technology Building and the Student Center.
