On Sept. 18, the University of North Georgia’s Outdoor Pursuits staff hosted a women’s climbing event at the Recreation Center on the Dahlonega Campus from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. Women with a wide range of climbing experience participated, which included both harnessed climbing on the 33-foot rock wall, as well as un-harnessed bouldering on the 10-foot wall.
Senior nursing major and climbing wall staff member, Maggie Freitag, says, “Anyone and everyone is welcome to climb at the Rec center climbing wall, regardless of prior experience.”
Freitag participated in Wednesday night’s event, serving as a belayer, controlling the climbing rope and ensuring the safety of the climber. She has been belaying for the UNG Recreation Center for two years and has been trained to ensure the safety of climbers of all skill levels. Along with maintaining safe climbing conditions, Freitag aims to “encourage participants to grow in pushing past their comfort zone.”
UNG’s Outdoor Pursuits hosts say there are climbing events throughout the year, encouraging students to learn a new skill and take advantage of on-campus resources. The climbing wall is designed to welcome new and experienced climbers alike, by offering a safe and free way for students to learn or practice their climbing skills. The walls at the Rec Center are staffed by trained belayers throughout the week and open to all students.
Climbing Wall Hours:
Monday – Thursday: 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Friday: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
