Textile Artists Group held its first meeting of the 2024 fall semester on Sept. 18 on the Dahlonega campus. Established in 2022, TAG meets all the University of North Georgia Dahlonega students’ crafting needs, whether beginners or crafting veterans. At these events, members are taught textile crafts such as crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching and embroidering.
TAG is taking a new approach to their meetings this semester, due to the introduction of Jess Self as the new professor of textiles. The current president of TAG, Jennie Bosman, expects that everything will be more casual and hopes to do a lot more public art this semester.
TAG’s first meeting hosted the largest turnout previous members had ever seen. Attendees were taught how to make rope for the scarecrow sculpture the club is creating for Dahlonega’s “Scares on the Square” event in the hopes of attracting new members.
The rope that was created by twisting different textured yarn and felt and entwining them together was used as the scarecrows outfit. The scarecrow is planned to resemble the magician’s assistant who died by being sawed in two, in the cult classic Beetlejuice.
Bosman encourages students who are interested in learning textile skills to stop by one of their monthly meetings, emphasizing that TAG is a space for creativity and learning.
“That’s the basis of it… getting anyone who wants to learn how to do it, to do it.” – Jennie Bosman, TAG President
Bosman says that all UNG students are welcome at TAG regardless of major or skill level.
TAG meets every third Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Hansford hall in room 208.
Upcoming meeting dates:
- Wednesday, Oct. 16
- Wednesday, Nov. 13
At TAG’s next meeting, bring a personal crafting project or learn the skill of crochet, and be taught by a pro.
