University of North Georgia President Dr. Michael P. Shannon delivered the 2024 State of the University address on the Gainesville campus, outlining key achievements, ongoing initiatives and future goals. His address, given on Oct. 24, reviewed the university’s progress over the past year while stressing the importance of community engagement and academic excellence.
Shannon highlighted UNG’s continued growth in enrollment and infrastructure. He reported a steady rise in student numbers, welcoming the largest freshman class in UNG’s 151-year history. The Corps of Cadets also welcomed its largest class in seven years.
Shannon underscored UNG’s dedication to student success by strengthening academic support services and expanding career development opportunities. He praised faculty and staff for maintaining high educational standards despite the growing enrollment. Shannon also emphasized preparing students for an evolving job market, highlighting the expansion of internships and partnerships with local businesses.
The president noted a significant rise in UNG’s philanthropic efforts, with donations increasing by 300% over the past four years, raising $47 million. He attributed this growth to the strong support from alumni, community members and corporate partners, all of whom have contributed to the university’s mission of enhancing educational opportunities. These funds have been vital in supporting scholarships, campus improvements and other initiatives that directly benefit students.
Looking ahead, Shannon outlined his vision for UNG’s future, focusing on academic innovation and research. He mentioned plans to introduce new degree programs aligned with emerging industry needs, helping UNG graduates stay competitive in the global economy. He also emphasized expanding research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to promote a culture of discovery and innovation.
“We are not just adapting to the changing landscape of higher education; we are defining the future of higher education. Our university is thriving, and we are creating an environment where our students are thriving.” – Dr. Michael Shannon, President of UNG
Shannon emphasized UNG’s role as a community leader, highlighting the university’s extensive partnerships with local organizations and its commitment to serving the surrounding region. He pointed to various initiatives such as service projects, internships and collaborative research, which demonstrate UNG’s positive impact on the community. These efforts not only provide valuable experiences for students but also foster a spirit of collaboration between the university and local stakeholders.
In closing, Shannon expressed gratitude for the continued support from the UNG community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni. He acknowledged their vital role in the university’s achievements and growth, emphasizing that it takes a collective effort to drive progress.
