With the 2024 fall semester coming to an end, the University of North Georgia Office of Student Involvement is hosting another “Is This a Christmas Movie?”. The event is taking place on Dec. 3 from 5 – 7 p.m. David Michener, the Director of Student Involvement will be putting up “Food for Finals” with assistance from Kay Andersen. This event was made for students to relax before finals and have a hearty meal.
In the past, the event consisted of an array of food provided for students to come by and partake in without any flair. However, Michener found this to be “kind of lame” and with assistance from Andersen created the “Is This a Christmas Movie?” aspect in order to really spur the students’ interest.
The event first took place 2 years ago with the movie “Die Hard”, a film that has been joked about as being a “Christmas movie” in certain circles. The next year, the film “Gremlins” was set as the movie to be analyzed by student body and staff alike. Both films fall into a category that Michener described as “being on the brink” of being a holiday movie.
“It’s fitting that you’re getting some people to sit down, have some good entertainment, hang out with their friends and build community.” – David Michener, UNG Director of Student Involvement (GVL)
This year, the event will be coming back in full swing with much more than just food and a show. The film to be shown will be “Batman Returns” with activities and prizes for those who attend. A trivia game centered around Batman facts will be taking place alongside free limited-time T-shirts for the first 75 students to attend the event. Alongside the Trivia will be a raffle to win prizes such as Funko Pops of many beloved Batman-related characters, Ornaments for the holidays, Crocs with a Batman motif and much more.
Looking further into the future, Michener has already thought of movie ideas for the next 10 years but is very open to any new ideas that students may have. He encourages students to reach out with any new ideas for the event or even possible corresponding events for the spring semester as he eventually would like the event to be fully run by students.
For any further information on the event, Michener can be connected through his email at [email protected] or in person in room 303 of the Gainesville Campus Student Center in the Student Involvement Office.
