Even though the University of North Georgia is a “dry campus,” you don’t have to go far to find a drink. There is one particular bar where students say they spend their time, Johnny B’s, and it is located right outside the UNG Dahlonega campus.
Jaelyne Rivera, a junior marketing major, said “Depending on my work schedule, I usually go to Johnny B’s on a Thursday because that is when most students go, and all my friends go on that day too.”
Rivera also said, “I really enjoy the atmosphere of Johnny B’s, especially the dancing and hanging out with my friends. I always have a great time when I go.”
Rivera has yet to miss a “Thirsty Thursday” this spring semester.
Sierra Fowler, a former UNG student shared one of her funniest memories at JB’s.
Fowler said, “One night…some rude man thought it would be cool to make fun of my friend’s beautiful curly hair, so I decided to step in and take matters into my own hands. I locked him into the men’s bathroom and held the door shut for a good minute. Only to then have him later come up to me to ask me my name and number. Then it dawned on me that he probably enjoyed it a little too much. Long story short, don’t mess with my friends, and also some men are weird, so I learned my lesson.”
According to the New York Times, Thursdays are a popular day for college students to go out during the week. At the University of Arizona, “Many students are so accustomed to a four-day week they cannot imagine life any other way. The weekend begins on Thursday night — known as “thirstday.”
The manager at Johnny B’s says the busiest day is on “Thursday because that is when we allow underagers to enter the bar.”
Kendall Olive, a senior at Starrs Mill High School said, “At Johnny B’s, I met many different types of people like athletes, cowboys and students. However, what I liked the most about the bar was that it brought all of us together. Even though it’s a small bar, having everyone get along and sing to music was a really heartfelt feeling. I don’t think people that go to big bars will understand the feeling of Johnny B’s small but close knit atmosphere.”
