Al Gomez, owner of Gomez Boxing Club, has been on a long journey ever since starting his business.
Gomez was always interested in boxing, however he pursued it at a later age than his borther, Julio Gomez. Their father also boxed and is arguably the biggest reason the two love it so much.
“We’ve all found our own path through it,” said Gomez. “I’m more [into] the business of it.”
Gomez started the business roughly seven years ago, albeit without a physical location. At that point in time, he reflected, it was more a community than a building. In fact, the physical location is still quite new at only four months old. Beforehand, Gomez trained his patrons, including his brother who boxes professionally, out of his garage.
All this means that boxing takes up much of the brothers’ time, although they seem to love it all the more.
Nestled a mere five minutes away from the Gainesville Square, the company is proud of its home. Gomez and his brother, while not originally from the city, love to represent it. Gomez stated that they chose the location because of the people there, and “like to believe they love us too.”
This representation reaches beyond patronizing the economy, however. Wherever Gomez’s brother, “The Notorious Julio Cesar Gomez,” goes, the city of Gainesville goes as well. This includes his next fight’s location, Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. The fight takes place March 30.
The two brothers built the gym around Julio Gomez. This does not, however, mean that its functionality is specific to him. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The brothers’ hope is that the gym’s champion-creating focus crafts more professionals like Julio Gomez.
The gym is open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays. The classes offered range in time from morning to midday and into the evening. Their programs include a 4-mile run club, kids’ classes and private sessions.
Prices may vary but the brothers’ gym does offer one week of free classes for those interested to experience the art of boxing before fully committing.
