On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Georgia Cornhole League hosted its first event of the season at The Cumming City Center (CCC). The event was led by Tanner Thomas, a League Director and Head Programmer.
Tanner Thomas runs the event alongside his brothers Dillon Thomas and Noah Thomas as a “side-gig” of sorts for folks to come out and enjoy some “non-corporate” fun as he put it. The league is divided by four separate “standings” and is made for anyone to be able to compete, no matter the skill level.
The 1st is known as the “Easy” standing and is recommended for those who have no experience with cornhole. Within this division, “The Daddy Bagz” is favored to win. The next is known as the “Medium” standing and is for those who have a moderate familiarization with the sport and have played in the backyard as a pastime. For this moderate division, the teams “Doin’ Our Best” and “Wrong Hole Fool!” are in contention to win.
The 3rd standing, and the final that is present in this season’s league, the “Hard” standing is made for those who could be considered the top of the casual players who could play in leagues. In this hard-fought position the team known as “CornHolt” is the main contender to win this division.
Tanner Thomas mentions that the names of the 1st three standings are of a fashion reminiscent to video games as he considered himself a “hardcore video game nut”. However, the official final standing that is present within the league is known as the “Club” standing, which is reserved for those who are superior at the game and can score points easily. Tanner Thomas remarked on how he wanted to do it this year but lacked the participants for it.
Due to the event not being connected to the Cornhole League, unlike Cornhole ATL or Peach State Cornhole, there are some issues that tend to come up. Tanner Thomas runs a “one strike, you’re out” rule for the events he holds at the city center to discourage people from getting rowdy and ruining the fun for other participants.
He hopes to run a “family friendly” event that people can come to for some fun and drinking to get away from the stress of everyday life. There are no current intentions of expanding the operations further than the CCC, in part due to the mayor’s love for a local cornhole event but also the desire to keep things simple for everyone involved.
Even though the 1st event of the league has wrapped up, succeeding events will be happening every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the same location next to the CCC. Tanner Thomas encourages people to come out and enjoy the atmosphere, food and drinks.
