With the Halloween season comes talks of scary stories, haunted houses, candy, and arguably most importantly, the question of “What are you going to be for Halloween?” Halloween costumes can create a unique opportunity for people to dress up without social judgment. From store-bought costumes to thrifted pieces, college students celebrate this holiday in many ways.
University of North Georgia students are taking different approaches to Halloween and how they choose to celebrate through costumes. For some, Halloween is an opportunity to express themselves through a costume and accessories or dress up as their favorite character.
Ryker Conoly, senior psychology major, says he’s utilizing pieces from his closet to create a vampire costume and relying on accessories to bring it together. He said, “I already have the shirt and the pants, I just had to buy fake blood and fangs.” His brother, Bodi Conoly, a senior kinesiology major, says he’s taking the same approach, using camo he already has to create his costume as a hunter.
While some students have planned out their costumes, others are not concerned with the holiday or planning their costumes. With the business of college life, not every student has the money, time or desire to plan a Halloween costume in advance.
Coleman Ellis, cybersecurity major, says “Last year I was Fred from Scooby Doo with all of my friends as a group, but I don’t really know what I am going to be yet.”
However, some students are not concerned with dressing up at all, and Halloween this year will be just another Thursday.
