A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Leilani Simon, a Chatham County mother recently convicted of the murder of her 20-month-old son, Quinton Simon, whose remains were found in a local landfill.
Simon, who initially reported her son missing on Oct. 5, 2022, was charged and found guilty on Friday of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, concealing the death of another, making a false report and 14 counts of making false statements.
Over four days of testimony, the trial painted a disturbing picture of Simon’s behavior and the events leading up to her son’s death. Witnesses testified about instances of alleged child abuse and troubling substance use.
In an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta, Talea McCarta, a 10th-grade student and neighbor, recounted seeing Simon push Quinton, causing him to fall, as well as an incident in which Simon allegedly shoved him into a pool without floaties. McCarta also described times when the toddler was left unattended for long periods at her home, with Simon never checking in.
The third day of the trial highlighted the testimony of Simon’s then-boyfriend, Danny Youngkin. Prosecutors suggested that Simon’s relationship with Youngkin had become her primary focus by the time of her son’s disappearance.
Youngkin, who lived with Simon during this period, admitted he did not check on Quinton the morning Simon reported him missing. The prosecution alleged that Quinton was not in his bed that morning, claiming Simon had killed him the previous night.
Simon is expected to appear before Judge Tammy Stokes on Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m., according to court records. Due to the overwhelming evidence against her, she could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
