The University of North Georgia is thrilled to announce that a brand new, state of the art theater is coming to the Gainesville campus. This sleek new cinema is set to become the go-to spot for all things film. Whether you’re a film buff or just looking for a cool place to hang out, this theater will offer an incredible experience for both students and the local community.
Located in the Performing Arts building, the new cinema is designed to be the main stage for the Georgia Film Festival and all movie screenings hosted by the School of Communication, Film & Theatre. Dr. Jeff Marker, head of the Communications Department, is excited about what this means for campus life. “The new cinema will become the main screen for the Georgia Film Festival and all other movie screenings,” he said. “We’re excited to see it become a central part of our film culture.”
This theater isn’t just for film majors. Whether you’re into blockbuster hits, indie films or anything in between, the new cinema will be a cultural hotspot for Gainesville and the surrounding areas. UNG has big plans to make this space a hub for community events and movie nights.
“We have our reasons for building the cinema, but it belongs to students first and foremost. I can’t wait to see the creative ways you’ll use the space.” – Dr. Jeff Marker, UNG Communications Department Head
“The Gainesville campus needs more fun and social things to do, and the cinema is one of many projects we’re working on to boost campus culture.” Dr. Marker shared. “It’s a place where students can come together, have fun, and enjoy some amazing films.”
Mark your calendars for September 12th when UNG will be kicking off the new cinema’s festivities with the Georgia Film Festival. The festival includes a showing of “My Old Ass”, which is set to be released Sept. 13. However, the festival was given to rights to an early screening. To attend, bring your student ID to the box office in the Performing Arts building to purchase a day or weekend pass for the Georgia Film Festival. The box office is open Monday through Thursday from 10 to 4 p.m.
