The University of North Georgia comes together every Thursday night from 6:30-9:30 p.m. to give students the opportunity to embrace their passion and creativity. The creator of the club, Courtney Day, started the weekly paint club for students with or without a focus in fine arts. This club offers a chance to become part of the art community and have a relaxed setting to explore artistic interests.
Kayleigh Riker, the photographer for the club, said, “I would recommend this club because it will help teach you and help you grow. You never know unless you try, and you don’t have to be perfect.”
The club was built on the idea that students could come together to socialize, gain skills and collaborate even after their graduation. Students and alumni go to student organized exhibitions and have professional practice workshops.
“Get out there and find art and create your own opportunities.”- Courtney Day, Paint Club Leader
“The club’s biggest importance is to build an art community and create opportunities for outside of school,” Day said.
Maddie Engel, a junior graphic design major, said, “I’ve been attending paint night since before I was an art student.”
“Practice comes first but this is a great way to dip your toes in if you want to know about art.” – Maddie Engel, Paint Club Attendee
Vaughn Duncan, a senior digital arts major, said, “Even if some days it’s difficult, it’s still fun.” His top three words to describe the club are “friendliness, community and practice.” Duncan said, “If you’re doodling in a notebook in class, you might as well come here and do it for fun.”
Chris Hale, President of EXCELERS, modeled for the first time for paint night. “It’s interesting seeing what the model looks like from the painter’s point of view,” he said. “It’s a nice break and a stress reliever for anyone with a busy schedule. The leader [Day] does well to modify things for people who are truly here to paint.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own art supplies. Any type of art is allowed and the model is provided. To join the club, visit the Paint Night page on UNG Connect to join.
