Travel, learn, and write your way through London with the University of North Georgia’s study abroad program, “Writing and Roaming in London.” Led by Dr. Michael Rifenburg, a professor in the UNG English department. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to develop their travel writing skills while immersing themselves in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
The program will run from June 4 – 28. Students will stay in on-campus housing at the University of Roehampton in a single occupancy room nestled within Roehampton’s Parkland campus. Students will be able to dive into courses like English 2230, English 2285 or English 2122.
“Studying travel writing in London is an exhilarating journey,” Rifenburg said. “The city offers vibrant cultures, iconic landmarks and diverse neighborhoods all while providing endless inspiration for aspiring writers.”
The program centers around a travel writing course, blending academic exploration with real-world experiences. Students will delve into London’s rich history, literary heritage and contemporary vibrance. Beyond classroom learning, students will have the chance to roam freely, discovering the city’s cultural treasures as a group and on their own with many excursion opportunities.
Excursions:
- Trip to Dr. Johnson’s house
- Day trip to Cambridge
- Walking tours of Whitehall from Big Ben to Trafalgar, the River Thames, and Fleet Street
- Visit to British Library and South London markets
- Visit to Soho and Covent Garden
- Weekends free for independent travel
The program’s itinerary includes a guided day trip to Cambridge, giving students a taste of life outside the bustling capital. However, much of the schedule allows for independent exploration. “Last time, two students went to a Harry Styles concert and some students went to Paris for the weekend,” Rifenburg said.
For Rifenburg, the program is also a family affair. He brings his wife and three children along, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere. The program is open to all UNG students, regardless of their major, and promises an enriching blend of academic rigor and cultural exploration. With London as their classroom, students will leave with improved writing skills and a broader perspective on the world.
Those ready to write their own London story should apply by Feb. 7, 2025! Explore the full details of the program on the UNG Study Abroad website.
