The Student Government Association (SGA) at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus has launched its newest initiative, the hammock village. This project is designed to enhance student involvement and provide a peaceful area for relaxation, aiming to improve the overall student experience on campus.
According to SGA Vice President, Shabnam Rezai, the hammock village was developed to support two of its primary pillars: engagement and advocacy. This project’s primary purpose is to foster a sense of community while offering students a place to unwind. It also addresses student concerns about improving the campus environment, reflecting the SGA’s commitment to responding to student needs.
“The main purpose of the hammock village is to increase involvement on campus and create a space where students can relax and create new connections with their peers.” – Shabnam Rezai, SGA Vice President
Situated behind the Student Center, the hammock village is nestled in a scenic area of the Gainesville campus surrounded by Georgia’s natural beauty. The space offers a tranquil environment for students to relax between classes. With fall weather approaching, students are encouraged to take advantage of the outdoor setting.
The SGA hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included a hammock giveaway, “The winners of the giveaway will be able to use the hammock village on the day of the event,” Rezai noted.
Looking to the future, the SGA plans to continue advocating for students’ needs by considering feedback and making improvements to the hammock village. Advocacy played a central role in the creation of the village. An SGA representative confirmed that the organization remains committed to addressing any concerns that arise, ensuring that the village continues to serve as a valuable resource for students.
The hammock village is expected to positively impact student well-being by providing an additional option for stress relief. Many students already use outdoor spaces on campus to relax, and the village offers another amenity for stress management and social interaction. By creating a space for relaxation and connection, the hammock village aligns with the SGA’s goals of improving campus life and supporting student engagement at UNG Gainesville.
Overall, the introduction of the hammock village marks a significant step in enhancing the student experience, providing a environment where students can unwind and engage with their peers. Students are able to rent hammocks from Campus Recreation and Wellness in the Hugh Mills Physical Education Complex.
