The University of North Georgia hosts Game Nights throughout the semester. They are held on the Gainesville campus in the Robinson Ballroom. The games start at 1:30 p.m. and go until 5:30 p.m. every Friday.
The Guild of Tabletop Gamers has been at UNG for a few years and is currently directed by Advisor Mary Ledford.
“It’s less of a club meeting and more of a hangout event for students to destress after class,” said Daniel Hall, tabletop coordinator.
Students can choose a tabletop game from the club’s library or feel free to bring their own. There are also special game nights which include, trivia, true crime, mystery and D&D.
Each game night has an average of 20-30 students who attend and they’re always welcoming new members.
“I think game night would be fun. I’ve always dominated my family in board games so I want to see how I would stack up against other people,” said freshman Micah Pittman, film and media studies major.
The guild has a library of games funded by the SGA, but members are encouraged to bring their own games and teach other students how to play if they’d like.
“Having all the kids come in and form community and get to spend time together is my favorite part,” said Ledford.
GTG has given students an opportunity to unwind and start new friendships. Students are welcome to stop by and stay as long as they like. With the many different tables, there is an opportunity to switch and rotate between games.
“My week is filled up with school and homework. Having a few hours on Friday to chill out and have fun is a good time. I met most of my college friends through Game Night, including my current relationship.” -Daniel Hall, tabletop game coordinator
Board games can be tense with competition, but are an excellent stress reliever. Attending a UNG Game Night can help keep the brain active outside of the classroom.
“I never knew UNG hosted game nights. After a tough exam, it would’ve helped me unwind, I’m sure. I would definitely recommend students check it out,” said UNG Graduate Nic Elliott.
To keep up with the GTG schedule, students can refer to the club’s Instagram page. This includes club photos, specialty game nights and overall club updates.
