On Oct. 30, the Black Student Union (BSU) hosted a Halloween Bash at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville Campus. The event took place in the Robinson Ballroom from 7 – 10 p.m. and was host to many activities.
“What are YOU thinking about dressing up as?”- Bisrat Degu, BSU Gainesville President
The event included traditional Jamaican food, a spooky photo booth and a much-anticipated costume contest.
As guests poured into the ballroom, they were greeted by a table chocked full of dishes prepared for their enjoyment such as rice and peas, curry goat, mac and cheese and other dishes such as Braised Oxtail. Students partook in the dishes and cleaned their plates to build up energy for the rest of the festivities that went into the night.
There was a Halloween-themed photo booth where guests could display their intricate costumes and strike a pose to immortalize their essence for ages to come. Students showed off their craftiness and creativity with characters such as Bill Cipher from “Gravity Falls” and the Kidnapper from “Black Phone” to their fellow guests with much passion.
As a surprise addition to the night, BSU opened the floor to guests to test their mettle and sing their hearts out in a karaoke event. Many people took the challenge and brought out their best, with students singing songs from bands such as Queen, singing solo to classic Frank Sinatra and some singing to a more youthful tune with The Weekend.
Using an intermission between the singing stars, Degu called attention and announced the winner of the costume contest. Everyone brought their attention to him as he announced the winner to be a group of students instead of a single individual. Called to the front came a group of elegantly dressed fairies in an array of colors that stole the show, and most importantly the trophy for best costumes that night.
“The Costume Ball is about so much more than just the masks. It’s a chance for students on a commuter campus to be able to come together and share fun moments with each other outside of the classroom, which is something that many students here don’t experience.” – Bisrat Degu, BSU Gainesville President
BSU continued the party late into the night and wished for students to attend their future events such as their End of Year Cookout which at this moment in time has no confirmed date.
