With only six games left in the Peach Belt Conference regular season, the University of North Georgia Women’s Basketball Team has only two losses thus far. The Nighthawks have one loss in conference play, which puts the team in a prime position to secure postseason play.

Julianne Sutton, a senior forward for the Nighthawks, says that head coach Buffie Burson emphasizes practicing how they want to play and always giving 100% effort. Sutton also says that coach Burson stresses pacing themselves from the beginning to the end of the season, which helps the players grow more and get better every season.

Abbie Franklin, a senior guard for the Nighthawks, says one of their keys to success is doing a walkthrough of their scouting information before every game. Franklin says that the team does their best to communicate with each other on every play.

Franklin says the players will do extra workouts with coaches or work on “skills” as the team refers to them. Franklin also says that one of the most helpful things that coach Burson does is help the players identify what they must work on despite their success this season.

Sutton says that bringing the conference tournament to the University of North Georgia is a great feeling because the girls have a lot of confidence when they play at home. The women’s team is on a roll and hopes to finish strong as they look to secure home-court advantage for the playoffs as well as an invitation to the NCAA Division II tournament.

The women’s team has had a great season so far, and it seems like they have almost everything going in their favor this late in the season. However, they aren’t home-free yet, as they still have to play some of their top conference opponents before tournament time.

The girls will take the court next on Feb. 9 in the Convocation Center against Clayton State University.
