Lumpkin Literacy, short for Lumpkin County Literacy Coalition, is buzzing into focus as they prepare for the return of their Spelling Bee & Variety Show that will be in the University of North Georgia’s Hoag Auditorium on the Dahlonega campus Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
Admission to the fundraising event is free, and donations are accepted at the event and on Lumpkin Literacy’s website. Donations fund Lumpkin County’s Dolly Parton’s Library program, which gifts free books to local children from birth to five years old. Currently, the program serves 750 children in the county.
The Lumpkin County Literacy Coalition is a non-profit organization that supports literacy workshops and educational outreach, including free GED prep classes and testing, dictionaries for 3rd-grade students, free novel sets for 6th-grade students and more.
The event includes a spelling bee in which teams of three will compete, and entertainment shows like skits and 3–5-minute readings hosted by volunteers, including members of Sigma Tau Delta who will be reading personal or published works.
For more information or to donate, visit the Lumpkin Chamber of Commerce and Lumpkin Literacy websites. Additional information on the funded program can be found on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library website.
