Across American universities, the journey of education transcends traditional classroom lectures and academic rigor. It delves into a realm where student involvement and grassroots organizing foster a culture of challenging norms and nurturing autonomy.

At the heart of the University of North Georgia, this transformative approach to education is found in the Office of Student Involvement (OSI). Under the leadership of David G. Lichener, OSI emerges not just as an office but as a dynamic force that helps students channel their creativity into meaningful action. OSI empowers students to amplify their voices, shaping positive changes in their educational environment and beyond.

“I help students create opportunities for themselves, both personally and professionally,” said David G. Lichener. “I am a bit like the school bus driver. I help open the door, let the students in, and help them get to where they might want to go.”

Students can harness the power of OSI by starting a Registered Student Organization (RSO). By bringing together at least four university students with a shared interest, and complying with university requirements, they can turn their vision into reality. RSOs offer more than just club membership; they are platforms for collective action and self-governance, fostering leadership skills and impacting the campus. OSI provides crucial support for these initiatives, from event planning to financial resources, helping ensure their success.

While the OSI offers a wealth of resources for student empowerment, students who commute to campus may find it challenging to engage with these opportunities as effectively as their on-campus counterparts. This can limit their ability to participate in spontaneous meetings, attend events, or fully immerse themselves in project collaborations. Although some events and groups within OSI do employ virtual engagement methods, this is not a guaranteed option for all activities, limiting commuting students’ ability to participate.

Engaging with OSI and participating in RSOs can be a significant step in one’s educational journey. Student-led initiatives, powered by OSI, are the heartbeat of a vibrant and inclusive campus. They offer a path for individuals to shape their campus experience, connect with peers, and drive positive change.

By using OSI’s resources, students can transform ideas into impactful actions, contributing to a campus environment enriched by diversity, creativity, and active engagement. Whether a student is driven by a unique hobby, a powerful cause, or a vision for a more vibrant campus, these many different paths are supported every step of the way by OSI.
